FTO cluster and ORE Catapult host joint innovation event at the Levenmouth Demonstrator Turbine
Did you know that ORE Catapult’s Levenmouth Demonstrator Turbine is the world’s most advanced open-access offshore wind turbine for research and has supported over 150 research projects since 2017?
Come and find out more at Forth and Tay Offshore Cluster’s innovation event being held at the Fife Renewable Innovation Centre on Friday 27 September from 0930 – 1300hrs, where you’ll hear all about the incredible research and development work that has been undertaken on the demonstrator turbine as well as the success stories from organisations that have benefited from ORE Catapult’s support.
We will start at 0930hrs sharp with a welcome from Shona Clive who leads the Forth and Tay Offshore Cluster, followed by members from the ORE Catapult team speaking about the turbine itself and the wide range of support and funding that ORE Catapult can provide. Topics covered will be:
- Operations and maintenance centre of excellence assets and capabilities
- Supply chain development and support programs
- Robotics and Autonomous Systems for Offshore wind operations and maintenance.
We’ll then run a series of site visits to the turbine itself where you will be able to see some technology testing in action. Numbers are restricted to 12 people per site visit for safety reasons, so reserve your place quickly if you are keen to go. You’ll need to bring along steel toe capped safety footwear and a high vis vest to access the platform. The ORE Catapult team will provide hard hats.
And if all of this isn’t enough, we’ll provide you with teas/coffees and a breakfast roll and we’ll have a small exhibition area for companies interested in showcasing their innovative solutions for the offshore wind sector. Please let us know if you are interested in exhibiting for which there is no cost.
With plenty of networking opportunities, an overview of how to access ORE Catapult support, success stories from demonstrator turbine projects, a site visit to the demonstrator turbine and a chance to speak directly with exhibitors about their innovations, we hope you’ll be registering right away for what we anticipate to be a hugely valuable event.
Two Forth & Tay Offshore partners scoop Green Energy Supply Chain Awards
Congratulations to two of our partners, Forth Ports and Montrose Port Authority, who were both recognized for their work in renewables at the Scottish Renewables Green Energy Supply Chain Awards which took place last Thursday.
Montrose Port won the Best Practice Award for their shore power facility, and Forth Ports received a special commendation for the Green Business Growth Award for their development at the Port of Leith.
Pictured above are the teams all suited and booted with their awards.
We’d also like to congratulate Lynn Sayer on her promotion to Chief Commercial Officer at Montrose Port Authority. Well done Lynn, very well deserved!

Milestone project puts new pin on the map for subsea controls specialist
Member news
Left to right: James Carnegie (Sales (Subsea) and Delivery Director, Viper Innovations), Phil Reid (Managing Director, J+S Subsea) and Richard Knox (CEO, Verlume).
Leading subsea controls specialist, J+S Subsea has announced the completion of a project which represents significant expansion of the company’s international corporate horizons.
The Kintore-based company’s first ever scope of work in Canada has involved the supply of three subsea battery-powered control systems to maintain integrity of the subsea electrical infrastructure when topside electrical power is unavailable. The project has been delivered through a collaborative approach involving Viper Innovations, Verlume, Richmond Mills Fabrication and MH Engineering (Fife), as well as J+S Subsea.
The scope included the design, engineering, manufacture, marinisation and testing of subsea-deployed systems that will maintain continuous application of Viper Innovations’ cutting-edge V-LIFE technology. The patented electrical passivation signal maintains the electrical integrity of the field and satellite extensions 350km off the coast of Canada, while the Floating Production, Storage & Offloading (FPSO) vessel is disconnected from the system during scheduled maintenance.
The J+S Subsea systems can be recharged on the deck of a Construction Support Vessel (CSV) or onshore, via the supplied charger, and redeployed for a further 90-days. Each system consists of a Verlume-supplied subsea battery and separate J+S Subsea control unit housing Viper’s V-SLIM (Subsea Line Integrity Monitor), with mating Electrical Flying Leads (EFL), housed in a steel frame constructed in accordance with DNV regulations.
