Case studies

Mammoet was invited to support with the load-in, transport to storage and subsequent load-out of 114 three-legged wind turbine foundation jackets as part of the marshalling activities for the Project. The project was carried out at Nigg Energy Park, Scotland. The jackets were received from Heavy transport Vessel (HTV) in batches of 4-6 jackets per shipment.

The implementation of Mammoet’s PTC210-DS ring crane was fundamental to achieving the load-out and the delivery schedule. This methodology allowed the load-out throughout any tide cycle whilst also allowing a simple barge and mooring arrangements. We used Self Propelled Modular Trans porter’s (SPMT’s) for the load-in given the HTV’s ability to maintain level with the quay and the sheltered stern load-in location. The SPMT allow the transportation of the Jackets in control and precision to their designated concrete foundations and then offloaded using the trailers integral hydraulics. The arrangement was highly manoeuvrable due to the SPMTs sophisticated steering capabilities allowing the jackets to be stored closely together for maximum storage capacity.

Moray East Mammoet, then as ALE, was invited to assist with the handling and storage of 48 wind turbine foundation jackets being delivered from Lamprell for temporary storage at Nigg Energy Park, Scotland. Mammoet provided all the jacket handling services including transport engineering, labour, Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT’s), transport beams and bridging and to allow for a seamless movement of the foundation jackets with both precision and maneuverability.

The chosen configuration was a simple three-trailer arrangement utilizing a total of 60 SPMT axles with hydraulic pins for quick connection into the Jacket grillage. The arrangement was determined to interface with the sea grillages and offered a quick connection and disconnection into the transport shelves and upper grillage. Load-spreading and bracings were employed to ensure synchronised movements with SPMTs. The inhouse designed and fabricated beam systems used hydraulic jacks to push the connecting pins to reduce manual labour but also ensure quick connection. This was particularly important due to the tidal restrictions at the load-in facility.
