Hugh Simpson (Contractors) Ltd. is principally involved in the plant hire and haulage sector specialising in heavy lifting and haulage for the energy (oil, wind/ nuclear), engineering, fishing and construction industries. Our company started in 1964 as a "Two Man Operation" and has grown significantly since the early days- we are now the largest heavy lifting operations company based in Caithness.
We have a fleet of mobile cranes ranging from 2.8T to 700T as well as standard vehicles, forklifts, telehandlers and access equipment offering cost effective assistance to our customers. Working alone or in partnership with local companies when required, we supply full stevedoring package (cranes and haulage) from the most northern harbours. We have been involved in handling nearly all turbines that have entered Caithness through the ports of Wick and Scrabster.

Case studies
We organized transportation, storage and lifting services for concrete beams to be delivered from their place of manufacture in Ireland. In total 76 beams, which were each between 7 and 24 m long and weigh between 3.4 and 43.3 Ton were shipped to Scrabster, where we unloaded the beams to storage and then re- loaded to transport to the installation site. Due to the total length of the trailer including tractor unit, the load movement from Scrabster to the installation site was escorted by Police. In one of the stages we also assisted in installing the beams in position using our cranes and personnel.

Produce full beam delivery programme including all Risk assessments and Method statements, Route surveys and transportation plans, Lift plans for each stage. Supply cranage and lifting gear in Scrabster harbour and where required on customers site. Supply vehicles to transport load to the installation site.
