Case studies

115VAC Strathspey Subsea UPS Replacement Project on CNR Ninian Central Platform. During routine maintenance healthcare checks on 115Vac Strathspey Subsea UPS, UPS failed to supply subsea load supplies due to inverter failure. System replacement was the only option to secure uninterrupted supplies to the subsea system due to the obsolescence of spare components for this system. Due to extra costing and extended delivery time for an Industrial-type system to replace complete Subsea UPS system, a commercial UPS system was designed to retrofit in place of the current system.

Contract type: System Replacement

Value: £18,000

Calibre Power designed and manufactured the replacement UPS system for the 115VAC Strathspey Subsea UPS to accommodate platform voltage supplies and physical limitations of the space available once the failed UPS system was removed. Due to the configuration of the platform input and output supply requirements, transformers were used to introduce a neutral on the input to accommodate the new UPS system requirements and a step-down transformer was used to reduce the system voltage from the 230Vac UPS voltage to 115Vac for the load supply requirements. Calibre Power installed and commissioned replacement UPS system. To reduce the downtime of platform load supplies, the failed UPS section was removed, and replacement system was retrofitted into the available space. Once replacement UPS was commissioned off load, a small outage of platform load supplies was required to tie-in new replacement system into the load supplies.

AC & DC UPS Maintenance Healthcare Checks of UPS Systems on North Sea Offshore Oil & Gas Platform.

Contract type: AC & DC UPS Maintenance Healthcare Checks

Value: Various depending of trip duration (20,000)

Calibre Power contracted to conduct yearly AC & DC UPS Maintenance Healthcare Checks on North Sea Offshore Oil & Gas Platform safety critical UPS systems consist of the following steps: Online “as found” testing consists of measurement of input/ battery and output voltage, current and frequency readings and scopemeter trace measurements of the rectifier output voltage prior to the filter circuit to confirm correct operation of the rectifier synchronisation, load voltage/current and transfer test measurements to confirm the correct operation of an AC UPS system. Offline “dead” checks consist of detailed inspection of internal components and record any discrepancies found. Offline “live” check consist of confirmation of alarm activation at manufacturers stipulated levels for voltage and earth alarms and additional alarm checks by simulating fault conditions within the UPS system as per system design. System is then returned to service and “as left” online measurements.
