Case studies

Scottish Power Renewables, part of the Iberdrola Group, a world leader in clean energy and leading wind energy producer worldwide, contracted CWind and Rovco to complete their annual subsea balance of plat (BOP) cable inspection works at East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm. CWind, leading the Rovco team, utilised a combination of DPII SOV vessel with a Working-Class ROV onboard, to undertake inspection works on nominated subsea structures. This work assisted in notifying the condition of the operational windfarm to allow informed maintenance planning as required based on the results of the surveys.

Contract type: 5-year subsea balance of plant (BOP) inspection and survey framework of WTG and array cables at East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm.

The Rovco team mounted their ROV with Kongsberg HD camera, CP probe, Flooded Member Detection equipment, Marine Growth cleaning & measurement tools and operated the vehicle during the most significant workable windows of the tidal cycles. This allowed the ROV to be operated in a way that it was always under full control thus negating the risk of damage to the ROV or client asset. Post-processing the video & inspection data in Rovco’s Headquarters meant their team could create the highest quality of reportable data focusing on the key subsea components as specified by the end-client. Rovco proprietary Intelligent Data Platform was utilised for daily progress tracking to the end-client as well as delivering the data for this project, allowing easy access to view the survey data libraries, reports, videos collected by Rovco, providing streamlined workflow and asset integrity historical, trendable data for future asset management.

The project, which was awarded by Innogy Renewables UK, began in September – with 24-hour ROV operations provided over a four-week period. We deployed a Cougar XT ROV fitted with both 3D imaging sonar and our SubSLAM 3D technology to complete planned asset inspection activities. The project was performed from the DP2 support vessel, Atlantic Voyager. A second ROV inspection campaign to assess internal foundations is due to mobilise this month. Galloper Offshore Wind Farm aimed to develop a detailed baseline understanding of the condition and status of their subsea Balance of Plant (BOP) infrastructure across the entirety of the wind farm.

The Rovco team mounted their ROV with their SubSLAM technology and operated the vehicle during the most significant slots of the operational tidal window, to maintain a safe working distance between the ROV and the structure. Post-processing the video data in Rovco’s Headquarters meant their team could create the highest quality photogrammetry models from the data collected by SubSLAM, focusing on the key subsea components as specified by the end-client. The 3D models provided an ideal baseline to encounter changes moving forward, with overlay modelling in subsequent years. A comprehensive subsea investigation enabled the timely detection of anomalies that could of in the longer term deteriorated, causing operational reliability issues. With this early detection, and access to highly accurate, illuminating survey data, 3D models and reports, informed asset rectification decisions could be made as required.
