Case studies

Borssele III and IV offshore wind farm is a 731.5MW wind project being developed 22km offshore the Zeeland province in the Netherlands. The wind farm is being developed on a 146km² area, approximately 55km from the Port of Vlissingen in the Borssele wind farm zone (BWFZ). The BWFZ consists of five wind farm sites and can generate more than 1,400MW of energy by 2020. The estimated investment for the project construction is €1.3bn ($1.5bn). The project achieved financial closure in June 2018. Construction of the wind farm commenced in 2019, while commercial operations are scheduled to begin in 2021. Designed to operate for 25 years, the wind farm will have the capacity to supply power to approximately 825,000 households a year.

Contract type: 6-month hire agreement

Value: 300,000

Providing a set of acoustic devices, targeted at different species of marine life with different hearing ranges (fish, turtle, seal, porpoise), removing them from temporary exclusion zones that are required for offshore construction to commence. Whilst other deterrents make a lot of unnecessary noise, our filter removes higher harmonics. The acoustics of the Fauna Guard modules focus only on the hearing range and sensitivity of the target species (frequency spectrum) and reaction threshold levels.

Deutsche Bucht is Canada-based independent power producer Northland Power’s third offshore wind farm. The offshore wind project is located in the North Sea, more than 100 kilometres from the mainland in the German Exclusive Economic Zone. The consistently high winds in the region provide an optimal energy yield. The wind farm uses one of the most powerful offshore turbines currently available – MHI Vestas’ 8.4 MW. Approximately 1.1 billion kilowatt hours of climate-friendly electricity are forecasted to be generated per year. This is enough to meet the needs of approximately 328,000 households.

Contract type: Short term hire agreement

Providing acoustic devices, targeted at porpoises, removing them from temporary exclusion zones that were required for offshore construction to commence. Academically validated sound patterns, developed through partners Van Oord, and cutting-edge military grade transducers developed by Neptune Sonar. FaunaGuard has now been made a mandatory requirement by BSH (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency) for all German EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) activities that could harm marine fauna. The whole German offshore wind market is now using FaunaGuard for projects that could impact porpoises.
