Case studies
Balfour Beatty Power & Transmission - Interim Operational Efficiency Consultant For many years, Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution was the ‘go to’ business for the design and delivery of overhead lines and cabling. They were however a company of expert engineers but not such good managers, nonetheless making high margins despite tremendous waste and inefficiency. Changing market conditions and increasing competition meant they had to change their culture and quickly as profits plunged, and I was hired after previous internal attempts by the business improvement team had failed.

There was also almost no business ‘best practice’, with little understanding of the need for ‘good housekeeping’ or dedicated accountable cost awareness. I therefore concentrated on these issues and, with my team, prepared an appropriate, effective and easily implementable system. We designed, tested and put in place a comprehensive ‘live dashboard’, so that the Regional Managers had complete visibility of costs as they were incurred, and all at the touch of a button.
Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing A turnaround role to:- a) Quickly curtail serious overspending of £6m pa - restructuring the delivery team and introducing much needed technical skills, implementing new processes along with a robust reporting mechanism. The business owns and manages 40,000 homes across London, the Midlands and East Anglia, over 8000 of which are Care & Support properties, as well as building 1000 new homes every year. b) Complete failed development projects that had substantial latent defects. c) Assist the separate Responsive Repairs business, METWORKS, by contributing my knowledge of operational best practice. Their delivery model was inappropriate for the property portfolio - lacking sufficiently skilled operatives and relying on semiskilled.

I concentrated my efforts on four areas:- 1) Designing and implementing a rolling £100m three-year refurbishment programme. (£40m in year one). This included setting up a 15 strong stock condition survey team to visit the majority of properties over an 18 month period. This then fed directly, via hand held technology, into the programme via Promaster software, including updated life cycle costing. 2) A complete service delivery design, focusing on the customer, splitting the delivery teams geographically into three budget accountable areas revolving around a central administrative hub, achieving productivity and efficiency savings of over £15m per year. 3) Working with the procurement and commercial teams to introduce significant cost savings and a properly managed supply chain. 4) Recovering failed development projects and liaising on the suitability of new projects.
