The company was formed in November 2013 by Patrick Crawford to capitalise on a specialist ROV and tooling spread previously developed to carry out salvage operations.
Based in Fife, Scotland, Utility ROV Services is an independent, hands-on ROV service provider specialising in Offshore Renewables, Interconnector, Oil & Gas and Decommissioning industries.
We are an energetic and innovative company that design, build and operate our own bespoke UTROV® systems and tooling to support subsea operations. Improving efficiency by controlling its suite of tools directly, the UTROV® provides multi-phase capability, eliminating the requirement to mobilise multiple spreads of equipment with individual teams for one single project.
Utility ROV Services possess both the expertise and the experience required to deliver projects to the highest standard, all made possible by the market-leading performance capability of the UTROV® system and our team.
We are able to deliver the UTROV® System along with our highly-skilled offshore workforce 24/7, 365 days a year, ensuring that project demands are met without compromise. The salvage roots of the company shone light on the requirement for a similar approach in other sectors. Key learnings were made in four main areas and remain the key focus of the team today:

SAFETY
Salvage is a hazardous task to be performed by divers. By converting to remote, diverless subsea technology with controllable launch and recovery solutions, the risk to personnel was significantly reduced.

EFFICIENCY
Bringing controllability and monitoring to the heavy tooling allowed wrecks to be surveyed in real time, whilst also streamlining the task at hand.

MULTI-PHASE CAPABILITY
Regardless of preparedness, salvage projects inevitably produce the unexpected. Re-mobilising with alternative equipment was not economically viable, therefore we needed to react using what was onboard. The multiple phases found in salvage projects had to be performed by a singular, versatile ROV, which became the primary driving factor in the development of the UTROV® and our multi-tool approach.

FIT-FOR-PURPOSE
During salvage projects, it was not necessary nor required to utilise over-complicated equipment. Instead, equipment was robustly designed to provide functionality and reliability, without being unnecessarily complicated.

UTROV® EVOLUTION
Today, the UTROV® system has evolved to operate in various sectors; however, our desire to pursue continuous improvement, based on the key pillars above remains as strong as ever.

Case studies

Date 07/03/20 - 25/04/20 Site Kriegers Flak OWF Vessel Global Symphony Operations Boulder Relocation, Survey, Video and Inspection UTROV® Tooling Used Tine Grab (T-A01), Tine Grab (T-A05)

Contract type: Subcontract

The scope of work consisted of boulder relocation and accompanying survey work along 18 IAC strings. In addition to performing general survey tasks, Utility ROV Services completed a scope of additional investigatory work along certain IAC strings at the client’s request.

Date 27/03/20 - 24/04/20 Site Triton Knoll OWF Vessel Boka Atlantis Operations Survey, Video and Inspection, Mattress Installation, Boulder Relocation UTROV® Tooling Used Tine Grab, Mattress Installation Frame

Contract type: Subcontract

In order to perform the gas export pipeline identification survey, Utility ROV Services utilised a TSS440 Pipe Tracker from a third-party supplier. An interface frame to allow mounting of the TSS440 to the UTROV® was designed and manufactured in-house at short notice and delivered in time to satisfy the project mobilisation date. The UTROV® and TSS440 were operated in 18 runs, each perpendicular to the gas export pipeline.Once the pipeline had been identified, mattress installation operations were performed using Utility ROV Services’ newly modified Mattress Installation Frame (MIF) to provide protection to the pipeline beneath. Finally, a boulder relocation campaign was conducted using the UTROV® equipped with the Tine Grab, where 1514 boulders were successfully relocated within the Triton Knoll Export Cable Routes and Inter-Array Cables.
